Pioneering North West eco-homes fully-occupied
Pioneering eco-homes designed by Croft Goode Architects – the first of their kind in the North West – are now fully occupied with local families.

The striking-looking, super-efficient houses, funded by the Homes and Communities Agency and developed by Great Places Housing Group, are the first in the North West to meet level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

All eight ‘ultra low carbon’ semi-detached houses at the £1.3million Astling Green development in Mereside, Blackpool, feature renewable technologies to reduce running costs.

The homes, made available at affordable rent to families on Blackpool Council’s housing waiting list, have eco-friendly structures, roof-mounted photovoltaic cells that generate electricity, heat exchange units, highly energy-efficient boilers and rainwater harvesting systems supplying toilets and washing machines.

They are just one level short of a zero-carbon home. At present new housing schemes are only required to meet Level 3 of the Code.

Adam Scott, associate director at Croft Goode Architects, said: ““This is the first housing development of its kind in the Fylde area and one of the very first low-carbon housing schemes to be completed in Lancashire. It represents a serious commitment by Great Places to provide ultra low-carbon homes and in the future we will see a significant increase in homes of this kind across the region.”

Stephen Porter, chief executive at Great Places Housing Group, said: “We pride ourselves on surpassing expectations wherever and whenever we can.

“Here, we’ve developed the greenest homes in Blackpool and made them available to young and growing families who’ll really benefit from their generous layouts, enclosed back gardens and low running costs.”
