East architects inject life into Hatcham Park
East architects inject life into Hatcham Park

Award winning architects, East have remodelled Hatcham Gardens also known as Kender Park, one of the Mayor of London's Great Spaces projects and outdoor programmes. The park has been transformed from an inhospitable graffiti clad space into an eye catching modern recreation area.

The initiative to improve the site is collaboration from London Development Agency (LDA) and Lewisham Borough Council. East were appointed to re-design the park and put their landscape and urban design know how into action. The practice used a consultation process with the local school and neighbourhood in order to develop a modern inner-city park.

Judith Losing, Director of East commented: "It has been extremely rewarding to work with Kender Primary School and the Building Exploratory on ideas for the redesign of the park. The pupils came up with new ideas for playing with water and sand, requested chess tables for their club to play outdoors under trees, designed dog obedience mats for the dog enclosure, and wrote poems about caring for each other and the environment, which are mounted on plaques on the new park benches."

It has resulted in Hatcham Gardens gaining over 40 Albizia trees, two large sandpits, brand new bespoke furniture and play equipment in galvanised steel, including swings, climbing equipment and roundabouts, a water fountain, an area for playing boules and it's own meadow area.

London Development Agency Deputy Chief Executive, Peter Bishop said: "Well designed public spaces can define an entire area. The changes to Hatcham Gardens set a new benchmark for modern parks - a Great Space of which we can all be proud. It will appeal to young and old and encourage local people to enjoy their great outdoors."
